A group of San Francisco lawyers organizing against the Trump administration are putting on a clinic in deflecting blame for years of abusive Democratic policies while rushing to take advantage of fear of Trump’s presidency. In statements and interviews ahead of an event in the Mission tomorrow, NPIC (nonprofit industrial complex) lawyers made predictions of dystopian life under Trump that sounded no different than life under Democrats from the federal to local level:
“His calls to jail protesters, deport immigrants, attack Black people, ban Muslims and his boasting of sexual assaults on women reflect all the hallmarks of fascism—autocracy that destroys its opposition, controls marginalized communities through violence, and organizes power and wealth for the elite,” the group said in a release.
This is different from the past eight years of Democrat rule, how exactly? Police will certainly be the “front line of ‘the terror machine'” under Trump, but only because that has been their exact function under Democrats. Whether Standing Rock, Baton Rouge, Chicago or elsewhere, police exist solely to terrorize. No Democratic mayor, governor nor president has made the first attempt to rein in police power. Quite the opposite, actually. And neither have any of these lawyers, until now.
“Less and less accountability“is another current problem projected onto the next administration. Ferguson’s Democratic leaders famously did everything in their power to prevent releasing records pertaining to the August 2014 protests. These lawyers are fully aware a multitude of laws exist to keep police immune and anonymous. The Justice Department under Attorney General Loretta Lynch shrugged off keeping track of people killed by police, and the DoJ’s COPS division makes headlines issuing stern non-binding scoldings to police departments that ultimately go nowhere. The next advance in accountability would be the first.
The same is true with threats of deportation and surveillance against Muslim and Latinx residents. The ACLU’s Northern California branch executive director Abdi Soltani warned of “expansion of deportations as well as programs that target Muslims” but these have already been daily facts of life for Muslims and any immigrants here. Muslims have dealt with state surveillance and profiling for decades. Democrats this summer held a huge publicity stunt disguised as social justice in support of a law that would increase surveillance of Muslims. The Obama administration’s mass deportation of Latinx and Haitian families earned him the title of “Deporter in Chief.” All of this was to appease the white voters who still voted for Trump. But none of these lawyers or their nonprofits were calling anyone to action, because challenging the Democrats responsible would mean risking funding, and no white liberal ever risks funding. Ever. Better to let the Democrats freely continue expanding an already massive and oppressive deportation apparatus, then challenge Republicans when they eventually get their hands on it.
The most sickening yet utterly revealing quote comes from Executive Director and Founder of Pangea Legal Services Niloufar Khonsari, who believes lawyers should help those at risk of being targeted by the Trump administration in order to use “legal assistance as a hook to politicize and mobilize clients and families.” Not so they and their immediate and possibly extended family can regain some measure of peace and stability, but so they can be gaslighted into Democratic indentured servitude by NPIC lawyers promising free legal aid during a crisis. This is textbook Democrat-NPIC work: nonprofits reach out to those in crisis, guide them through immediate trouble, then manipulate them into working on Democratic agenda that further institutionalizes the conditions responsible for that crisis. And profit immensely the entire time. The sooner more people learn this about Democrats and the NPIC, the better.
